Analgesics (Painkillers)

Some medicines can be bought at the pharmacy without a prescription. Painkillers (analgesics) and fever reducing products (antipyretics) are well known examples. These medicines generally are harmless, but become dangerous if you take too much of it.

BEWARE

  • There are many types of painkillers and they work in different ways. Some are prescription medicines, others are not. Only your doctor knows which painkiller to use for which symptoms. So ask advice.
  • Painkillers are addictive.
  • If you often use painkillers, your body will get accustomed to them. You will need more and more painkillers to relieve the pain. This is not good for your body. After a while, your doctor will no longer be able to prescribe pain medication because nothing helps any more.
  • Most painkillers are bad for your stomach. Taking them wrongly may cause stomach bleeding.
  • Painkillers containing codeine cannot be taken just like that. Stick to your doctor's prescription and do not take leftover pills at a later time without consulting your doctor first.

Tip

Consult your doctor if the pain does not disappear after a few days or if it worsens.
