Female sex workers

Contraceptives that are less suitable for sex workers.  These methods are reliable but there is a risk of complications when you have an infection.

2nd choice:

  • The coil is a small plastic object in the form of a T or an anchor.
  • It is inserted in the womb.
  • There are two kinds of coils: the copper coil and the hormone coil.

How do you use the coil?

  • A coil can be placed at any moment in the cycle, but preferably during your period, because then the womb is easier to reach.
  • The doctor will check the coil every year.
  • After 5 years the coil is replaced.
  • It is not a problem if you want to remove the coil earlier.

When are you protected against pregnancy?

  • The coil immediately protects you against pregnancy.
  • If you want to become pregnant, you have the coil removed and can become pregnant immediately.

What do you notice of a coil?

1. The copper coil:

  • Because there are no hormones, you keep menstruating.
  • During the first months, the womb has to get used to the coil and you may have more irregular and longer periods, increased bleeding and bleeding between periods and lower stomach-ache.
  • It is not a problem if you have more vaginal discharge.
  • If these side effects continue after 6 months, you have to consider them as permanent.

2. The hormone coil:

  • It is possible that after some time your periods decrease or stop altogether.
  • During the first months your body has to get used to the hormones and there may be some side effects: headache, sore breasts, acne or a swollen feeling.
  • You don’t have to worry if you have more vaginal discharge.
  • These side effects usually disappear spontaneously.  If not, you have to consult a doctor.

Also your womb has to get used to the coil and this may cause some bleeding between periods and stomach-ache during the first months.

The coil for sex workers is not a good contraceptive. Because you have different sex partners, there is more risk of an inflammation of the Fallopian tubes.

Sickness and medication

  • If a doctor wants to prescribe other medicines, tell him that you use a coil.
  • Some medicines and medicinal herbs may reduce the effectiveness of the coil.
