Your body

It is important to take good care of your body. Try to eat healthy, to exercise and to avoid bottling up your emotions and worries as much as possible. It all seems so obvious and yet most people do not do what is good for them.  Below you will find information on the following topics:

Did you know that
  • If you are in good physical condition, you feel better about yourself and you look prettier and healthier!

It's never too late to start.  Following these suggestions will help you improve your health bit by bit.

  • Definitely drink enough water and not just sugary drinks. You should drink at least 1.5 l of water a day.  Limit your caffeine intake, because it has a diuretic (fluid discharging) effect.
  • Look young longer: a healthy diet is the best way to delay aging.
  • If you work nights, have a meal before your night shift. At night you can safely eat a snack, because that increases your alertness.  A high protein meal (meat, fish, cheese) at the beginning of your shift will keep you awake.
  • Go straight to bed after your night shift. Postpone odd jobs till later.
  • If you are planning to have aesthetic surgery, get proper advice from a medical specialist. These doctors have the right knowledge and experience and will provide the best results.

Use of Medication

When you are sick or an ailment is bothering you, you sometimes want to take medication quickly.

BEWARE! Taking wrong or bad medicines will not make you better and may be harmful to your health.

  •  Therefore, do not take medicines left over from a previous occasion.
  • Do not take medicines of a friend who had the similar symptoms.
  • Do not buy medicines on the Internet.
  • Do not accept medicines from an errand boy in the street.

  • Most symptoms disappear by themselves after a couple of days. If not, go and see a doctor.
  • Always visit a doctor before taking any medicines. The doctor can determine the exact cause of your problem and therefore prescribe the most appropriate treatment.
  • Respect times and doses. Never skip an intake and respect the prescribed quantities.
  • Do not stop earlier than prescribed. Even if you feel better, continue taking your medicines as prescribed by the doctor. This is necessary in order to fully recover. If you stop too soon, an infection may return.
  • Do not store medicines. Do not keep leftover medicines for a future occasion. Return it to the pharmacy. Definitely do not share it with friends.
  • Buy your medicines at the pharmacy. Never take any medicines if you do not know where it comes from.
  • In case of problems, contact a doctor. If you do not trust a medicine, or if you feel nauseous after taking medicines, please contact your doctor.

If you lead a busy and irregular life, it is convenient to have food delivered.  Maybe you tend to go for snacks, crisps and cola?  But if you put in a little effort and pay attention to what you eat, you will soon be feeling better.

Ten reasons for a healthy diet:

  1. Healthy weight: Healthy food and exercise, the ideal combination if you would like to maintain your ideal weight.
  2. Improved resistance against diseases: A healthy diet with plenty of vitamins and minerals supports your immune system.
  3. Better performance: Eating healthy means feeding your body.  Enough energy to allow you to perform well.
  4. Better stress control: Healthy food can help you deal with stress better. With proper nutrition you are less irritable.
  5. Good for your mood: Enjoying a healthy meal makes you feel good.
  6. Feel more like being active: People who eat healthy feel better.  As a result, you have more energy and feel more like exercising.
  7. Look young longer: a healthy diet is the best way to delay aging.
  8. Stay fit longer: Your muscles and bones stay in good condition longer if you eat healthy.
  9. Reduce the risk of illness: Healthy food protects you against cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes and cancer.
  10. A good example tends to be followed: Setting a good example is one of the best ways to teach your children to eat healthy.

The active food pyramid can be used as a tool to eat healthy and varied food.  It is of course not the intention that you select the same food from this pyramid every day.  If you vary these foods  you will be eating a balanced healthy diet.

How interpret this pyramid?

The pyramid's lower sections are the biggest, this means you need a lot of this food.

The pyramid's top sections are smaller, so consumption of this food is best limited.  It is important, however, to combine as many elements of the pyramid as possible in every meal.

Eating healthy and irregular working hours

Here are some suggestions for eating healthy while working irregular hours:

  • Have a meal before starting your night shift. At night you can safely eat a snack, because that increases your alertness.  A high protein meal (meat, fish, cheese) at the beginning of your shift will keep you awake.
  • A carbohydrate-rich meal (bread, pasta, rice) during the second part of the night gives you energy.
  • Avoid fatty meals such as fast food.
  • Take at least 30 minutes for a meal, even at work. Eating too quickly promotes digestive problems.
  • Avoid spicy meals as they may disturb your digestion.
  • Avoid sugary snacks and sodas.  At first they will give you more energy, but then you will ‘crash’ and feel sleepy.
  • If you do get hungry between meals, eat some fruit, (low fat) yogurt, crackers, rice cakes, speculoos or gingerbread.
  • Use coffee and energy drinks with caution.  These high-caffeine drinks do have a stimulating effect, but are also dangerous.  In high doses, these drinks may cause digestive, heart rhythm and sleeping problems.
  • Do not eat heavy meals just before bedtime!

Do you have to drink much alcohol at work? Drinking alcohol is rather the rule than the exception in a club / bar.

  • Nobody can force you to drink alcohol.  Neither the manager nor the customer! If there really is no other way, consult the manager about a solution.
  • If you drink much you may lose control of the situation.  You lose your inhibitions, which might lead to being less careful about safe sex.

Maybe you are using drugs and you need money for it, or maybe you are financing your partner's drug or alcohol use? This can put a lot of pressure on you at work, which may in turn affect your negotiations with the customers.

  • If a customer brings cocaine to use together, remember that with cocaine there is a greater risk, as drug-using clients are often unpredictable and may become aggressive.  You endanger yourself this way.
  • The combination of alcohol and cocaine may seem ideal, the one stimulates and the other numbs you.  It allows you to go on for hours without feeling tired or drunk.  This obviously is bad for your body.
  • If you feel that you can no longer control your drug or alcohol use, do not hesitate to look for help.

Night work

Working in the erotic business often involves night work. The following suggestions may be of use.

Before working hours:

  • Do not make your day too strenuous before you start your night shift.
  • The best way to be fit at night is to sleep well during the day.
  • Make sure you have at least seven hours of quality sleep during the day, including naps.

 During working hours:

  • Do not drink too much coffee and do not use drugs to stay awake.
  • Try and get some variation in your work between two and five in the morning and contact your colleagues to help you get through the toughest hours of the night.
  • Take a nap in the middle of the night if your schedule and your employer so allow.
  • Eliminate monotonous sounds like the hum of a computer, they make you sleepy.
  • Be careful driving home. Take a nap first if you are too sleepy.

Daytime sleep

You work nights? Then naturally it is important to sleep well during the day. Below you can find some tips:

  • Limit the use of coffee, tea, cola and chocolate during the second part of your night shift.
  • If you dim the lights at work somewhat come early morning, your body starts to prepare itself for its "night"
  • Get plenty of exercise during your time off.
  • Put on sunglasses if it is bright and sunny when you drive home in the morning.
  • Limit alcohol and cigarettes before you go to sleep.
  • Go straight to bed after your night shift. Postpone odd jobs till later.
  • Have a light snack before going to bed, so you are not hungry.
  • Make your bedroom dark, quiet and comfortable in temperature.
  • If you sleep during the day, you can shut out the daylight by wearing a black mask over your eyes.
  • Turn off your mobile phone, disconnect your land line, turn off the doorbell.
  • Use earplugs if there is too much noise.
  • Stick to a fixed sleep ritual.

Exercise can help you feel better and usually improves your night rest. If you are unable to go to the gym regularly, make sure that you have some small sports equipment at home like weights or an exercise bike. On your own, it often is hard to keep going. By working out with a girlfriend you can combine business with pleasure!

Aesthetic surgery

Perhaps you are thinking about having some aesthetic surgery done? Be careful and make sure not to jeopardise your own health. Prepare yourself properly for surgery and have it done under supervision of a medical specialist. These doctors have the right knowledge and experience and will provide the best results.

Being properly prepared is crucial. Make sure you know what you want so you feel strong and confident. But how do you do this?

  • Make sure you are mentally prepared for the surgery. Are you sure you have made the right choice for you? Remember: some interventions are final and irreversible.
  • Carefully consider the pros and cons of the surgery.
  • Get some prior advice from fellow sex workers who have had positive experiences.
  • Gather information about the procedure from different surgeons. Never decide after the first consultation that you want this doctor to perform the surgery. Let the information sink in first and give yourself time to take the right decision.
  • To get answers to all your questions, it may help to draw up a questionnaire in advance. By doing so you do not forget any questions you wanted to ask the doctor and you will be going home with all the information you wanted.
  • What questions can you ask?  Here are some examples:

What does this operation involve and how does the doctor perform it?

What are the risks of this surgery?

Can I prepare myself for the day of surgery?

What kind of anaesthesia will I receive? (local or general anaesthesia?).

How will I feel after surgery?

What kinds of pains are normal? Will I have to take medication after surgery?

Breast Self- Examination

Examining your own breasts is not easy. What is normal and what is not normal?

If you feel a lump, does it belong there or does it not?

Breast self-examination is a way to become familiar with your breasts, so you know how your breasts feel. If there is any change, you will notice it sooner.

Whenever you have any doubts, you can always consult your doctor.
